Black History Class

Black history of art

In Fall 2023 we launched Black History of Art, one of the classes we offer in which students learn about Black people in American history that influenced and inspired artists around the world. The middle school students of I.S. 211 - John Wilson in Brooklyn, NY studied the portraiture of Charles White, the Neo-expressionism of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the folk art of Clementine Hunter. Students created their own art inspired by these pioneers and showcased their work in an art exhibit in their school library.

SCHOOL PROGRAMMING

In Fall 2023, We Major launched one of our Black History Class programs called “Black History of Art.” Middle school students learned about influential Black visual artists in American history: Charles White, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Clementine Hunter. Students created their own pieces inspired by the works of these artists, and showcased their drawings and paintings in their own art exhibit.
